Outpatient clinics

Canberra Health Services provides a number of outpatient clinics.

An outpatient is a person referred for a specialist appointment. Referrals usually come from a General Practitioner. The specialist is often a doctor but may also be a nurse, physiotherapist, dietitian or allied health worker.

Care is provided on an appointment basis and patients are not admitted to hospital.

Who can I bring with me to an appointment?

There are currently visitor restrictions in place due to COVID-19.

Please read the latest information here before coming to your appointment.

If you have any questions about visitor restrictions and your upcoming appointment, please check with the clinic by using the relevant phone number below.

How do I make an Appointment?

You will need a referral from your GP to make an appointment. Your GP will send the referral directly to the outpatient clinic administration team.

Generally, once your referral is received, our clinicians will determine the urgency to see you; this process is known as ‘triage’. They will instruct the administrative teams to book your appointment. If an appointment is not available for the level of urgency, you will be placed on a waiting list. A letter will be sent to you and your GP to inform you that you have been placed on a waiting list for an outpatient appointment.

Our teams will contact you once an appointment becomes available.

You do not need to call us unless you are following up on an existing appointment.

If you call us and leave a message, please note that we will endeavour to return your call within 2 business days.

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

Please cancel or reschedule your appointment 72 hours (3 days) in advance where possible so that we can offer the appointment to another patient.

You can do this by:

  • calling the clinic directly with the number you have been provided or using the appropriate number above
  • using our online cancellation form.
What happens if I don’t attend my appointment?

We have many more people needing appointments that we have to offer, so we really appreciate you letting us know when you can’t attend.

If you do not attend your appointment without letting us know:

  • We will write to you and your GP to inform you that we have recorded your non-attendance.
  • You will have three months to contact the service, state the reason for not attending and rebook your appointment.
  • You will be taken off the waiting list if we do not hear from you within three months of your missed appointment. This means you will require a new referral before seeking an outpatient appointment with Canberra Health Services.
Telehealth appointments

Many outpatient appointments are available via a telephone and video conference.

If you would prefer a telehealth appointment, ask for one when our team call you to book your appointment. Where it can be arranged, our staff will do so.

If you have organised a telehealth appointment, we have information about what to expect from your telehealth consultation and conducting a telehealth test call.
