Endocrinology & Diabetes

Medical appointments for diabetes and endocrinology services require a named medical referral from your GP or other medical specialist. For specific referral details and processes, please contact the service.

In line with Medicare guidelines, non-eligible patients may need to pay a fee to use our services.

To allow us to see the most serious needs first, all referrals need the following minimum criteria:

  • reason for referral
  • duration of symptoms and management to date
  • current medication list
  • recent investigation results
  • latest pathology, including HbA1c if required
  • past medical history

All routine referrals can be sent via e-referral, fax or post.

Endocrinology Services

Our services include treatment and management for inpatients and outpatients with general endocrinology conditions including; thyroid cancer, pituitary disorders, endocrine conditions in pregnancy, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disorders.

We also offer an on-call after hour’s service through the Canberra Hospital switchboard on 02 5124 2222.

Diabetes Services

The Diabetes Unit provides various services to help treat and educate people with diabetes in the ACT and surrounding NSW regions. Diabetes services available to those with pre-diabetes, children, adolescents and adults, as well as women during pregnancy.

Our services include:

  • continuous glucose monitoring
  • education program for people with cultural and/or special needs
  • foot assessment for people with diabetes
  • group programs for people with pre-diabetes
  • health professional education, clinical placements and diabetes education training program
  • high risk foot service for people with or at high risk of acute foot complications
  • individual and group education programs for people with diabetes and their carers
  • insulin pump initiative and stabilisation
  • paediatric service for infants and children up to 18 years
  • pregnancy service for women planning pregnancy or who have gestational, type 1 or type 2 diabetes during pregnancy
  • psychological support through diabetes social workers
  • specialised satellite multidisciplinary medical, nursing and allied health services for adults and paediatric clients within community health care settings

Please note, all suspected newly diagnosed paediatric diabetes cases should be discussed prior to referral with an on call paediatric endocrinologist on 0466 655 068.

What to bring to your appointment

You should bring the list of items below to your appointment even if they are not included in your referral letter.

  • recent pathology results (including HBA1C if required)
  • list of current medications and/or medication packets
  • blood glucose meter and record book for diabetes (if diabetes related appointment)
  • relevant scans and x-rays
